By creating social and forum account which impersonate a company and/or its staff, an attacker can cause considerable damage to his target’s reputation and income. News of bad conduct and disgusting or illegal response can travel like wildfire and cause almost irreparable harm to the victim’s business, as well as its SERP performance.
Defense
There’s little you can do to prevent an NSEO attack of this type, except closely monitor what sites and content rank for your company’s brand and IP terms, and use preventative ORM to shore up your reputation, if you have cause to suspect that a competitor, or a disgruntled ex-staff member, may resort to such illegal measures to damage your company’s reputation and income.
