Multiply the Bad

Details

Vector type:
Reputation Attack
Risk level:
Moderate
Impact level:
Moderate to High

This works hand-in-hand with “Boost the Bad.” The premise here is to find bad press about your target, and then to not only link to that bad press from fora, discussion sites, blogs, trade websites, and social media, but to actively republish the negative content on as many relevant high-ranking sites as possible. This can result in several versions of the same content occupying Top 10 SERP positions for the victim’s brand or company name searches.

Defense

The same as “Boost the Bad,” there’s nothing you can directly do to mitigate this type of attack, except follow standard SEO/ORM practices to outperform the negative results and push them onto page 2 or ideally page 3 of the SERPs. And the more negative results you’re dealing with, the harder that task becomes.
