Glossary of Negative SEO Terms:

  • 301 Attack
    Any attempt to negatively affect a target website by implementing server redirects from external content to the target website
      
  • Brand Jacking
    Any attempt to impersonate the target site/company, or its staff in order to steal its customers and sales, or to create negative publicity.
     
  • Canonical Attack
    Any attack designed to confuse Google’s systems about the origin of online content, in an attempt to get the search engine to pick the attacker’s version of that content over the target website’s.
     
  • Content Attack
    Any attack which in some way alters or affects the target website’s content directly, for example using profanities in its comment section, in order to trigger Google’s “Adult Content” filters.
     
  • Content Management System
    A Content Management System (CMS) is a software application that allows users to create, manage, and modify digital content on a website without needing advanced technical skills.
     
  • Copy Attack
    Any attack which copies the target website’s content directly, and then attempts to claim copyright to that content, or to file copyright claims against the target site.
     
  • Denial of Service (DDoS) Attack
    Any malicious attempt to disrupt the normal traffic of a targeted server, service, or website by overwhelming it with a flood of fake internet traffic from multiple sources, thus slowing down or disabling the target website. 
     
  • Duplication Attack
    Any attack which copies content directly from the target website and then adulterates it in such a way as to trigger Google’s “Adult Content” or “Malicious Content” filters, while still attributing the adulterated versions to the target website.
     
  • Google Manipulation
    Any attempt designed to alter Google’s search suggestions into showing competitor content and/or products instead of the target site’s versions.
     
  • Hack Attack
    Any intrusion attack designed to gain direct administrative control over the target website in order to change its content or purpose.
     
  • Link Based Attack
    As the name suggests, this is any attack which involves creating (or removing) external links to the target website.
     
  • Reputation Attack
    Any attempt to negatively affect the target website’s or company’s reputation online and in the real world.
      
  • Review Systems Attack
    Any attack which attempts to remove or negate positive reviews on systems like Google My Business, TrustPilot, etc.
