DDoS & Service Attack

Details

Vector type:
Server Attack
Risk level:
Low
Impact level:
Low to Moderate

In essence, a DDoS (Distributed Denial of Service) Attack is a malicious attempt to disrupt the normal operation and availability of your target’s website. This is accomplished by flooding the victim’s server with a torrent of artificial requests with the intention of slowing the website to a crawl or crashing the server entirely. Like a “DMCA Takedown Attack,” this approach is especially effective at peak sales days – like Black Friday, Cyber Monday, etc. – and during peak hours on regular days.

Regular successful DDoS Attacks which are not dealt with will also affect the way Google perceives its reliability as a source of information.

Defense

A decent hosting package and CDN (Content Delivery Network) setup will usually be sufficient to deal with this type of attack, unless it’s persistent and scaled to the point where even a CDN has problems.
