The Link Removal Request Attack relies on the attacker successfully impersonating the target, or the target’s staff. The idea is to identify high-value inbound links to the victim’s website, and then contact the webmasters of the linking sites with removal requests. If done with sufficient effort and success, this will weaken the target site’s link profile to the degree where SERP rankings are negatively affected.
Defense
There’s no real defense against this type of attack. About the only approach is to monitor your site’s link profile, and to reach out to inlinking sites, if you see links being removed.
