By finding bad press about your target and then simply linking to it from relevant fora, discussion groups, trade websites, and social media, it’s possible to float that bad press to the top (or at least into the Top 10) for brand and company searches. This can have a significant negative impact on your victim’s conversion rates and income.
Defense
There’s nothing you can directly do to mitigate this type of attack, except follow standard SEO/ORM practices to outperform the negative result and push it onto page 2 or ideally page 3 of the SERPs
